Open Enrollment Season

Open enrollment is a period of time when you can sign up for health insurance or make changes to your existing coverage or other work benefits.

Here are some things to consider right now.

Employee Benefits: Time frame varies by employer

  • It is important to review your employee benefits such as you health, vision, and dental coverage. Should you change to a high deductible plan and start a Health Savings Account?

  • You may need to plan to use your FSA funds by year end or determine how much you want to contribute next year.

  • You may be able to sign up for life and disability insurance if you hadn't before.

  • Review your retirement plan - are you taking advantage of your employer match, do you now have a Roth option?

ACA Healthcare:  Open enrollment is November 1 to January 15

If you already have Marketplace coverage, you will be automatically enrolled in a plan for next year to avoid a gap in coverage.

However, if you want to make changes or your situation has changed you have until December 15th to pick a different plan so that your coverage starts January 1:

Medicare: Open Enrollment is runs from October 15 to December 7

During this period, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or switch from one Part D prescription drug plan to another. People with Medicare can also join a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the first time during open enrollment. Be sure to check with your Medicare specialist on what exactly you may be able to do.

Special Enrollment Period: You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period outside of the open enrollment or annual enrollment time frames if your situation has changed such as getting married or divorced, losing a job, having a baby, and more. This may be available for all of the above types of insurance.
